Mini-Forest

Project

It all Started With a Little Book Club

We started out as a simple environmental book club, but one of our books inspired us to become much more. Now we are the Iowa Mini-Forest Project, the founders of the first Mini-Forest in Iowa and advocates for environmentalism in our communities.

What is a mini-forest?

Mini-Forests are densely-populated forests grown within a small space. Inspired by Japanese Botanist Akira Miyawaki’s revolutionary growing technique, the native trees and shrubs in a Mini-Forest need only 15-20 years to reach maturity, while normal forests take over a century to develop. The compact design of Mini-Forest makes them perfect for adding a touch of green to isolated areas and urban spaces, yet Mini-Forest still provide all the environmental benefits that regular forests do.

Iowa's first mini-forest

We created Iowa’s first Mini-Forest at  Brookview Park in West Des Moines. We worked with Waukee school students, the City of West Des Moines, volunteers, and more over the course of 2 days to prepare a site no bigger than a tennis field and plant around 1,200 native Iowa trees.

Where Can I Visit a Mini-Forest?

While Iowa currently has only one Mini-Forest, there are numerous Mini-Forests located around the world. In addition to various forests spread across the U.S and Canada, you can find Mini-Forests throughout Europe and Asia.

How can I plant a mini-Forest

A lot of work goes into planting a Mini-Forest, but it’s all worth it in the end! The process begins by preparing the location of your Mini-Forest and then planting all the native plants. After the plants have settled in the soil, you must tend to them constantly with regular mulching, composting, and watering. After a few years, the forest will be self-sustaining and all you need to do is sit back and enjoy the Mini-Forest you made!

How Can I Plant A Mini-Forest?

The best way to get involved in the Brookview Mini-Forest is to volunteer. We encourage people of all ages, young and old, to participate and experience the Mini-Forest firsthand. Typical tasks for a Mini-Forest volunteer includes watering, mulching, weeding, and pruning. Contact us using the form at the bottom of the site to learn more and sign up for a volunteering session!
